The geographic location is important to the setting of the story because the story takes place in a town north of Boston, just 5 miles from the beach at an A & P grocery store. The story states, ''Our town is five miles from a beach'', ''We're north of Boston.'' This is important because the teenage girls that walk into A&P are coming from the beach and are in their bikinis with no shoes on. This is a town that doesn’t do well with outsiders since many of the occupants have not seen the beach in years.
The time in which the story is set is relevant to the setting and the meaning of the work because it takes place in the summer of the 1980s. This causes conflict between the old fashion women, young teenage girls, and of course the clerk who can't keep his eyes off them. The situation at the A&P takes place during the daylight hours when things are much clearer to recognize. For example, when the young girls are in the store they are under the fluorescent lighting which draws attention to their bare skin and feet.
