John Updike A & P Reaction

My initial reaction to the story A&P, written by John Updike, was that the narrator was very vivid and expressive when he described the girls. He mentioned “Queenie” had on a “dirty-pink beige top with a little numble all over it,” her straps hanging on her shoulders, and that she had black hair. He stated that other girls think that Queenie is “striking” or “attractive.” (pg. 164) He also talked about the other girl as well, one being “chunky,” with “a bright green two-piece with seams on the bra,” and the third girl as having a “chubby berry face, with the lips all bunched together under her nose.” (pg. 164). While reading the second story, Araby, written by James Joyce, I enjoyed the parts where the main character would obsess over the girl and always follow her around. He was basically in love with her and always thought about her. (pg 169) In Araby, however, I hated the fact that the uncle completely forgot and was oblivious to the fact that he promised the boy he would get him the money for his train fare. But I was surprised that the boy did not give up and still went to Araby to get the girl he liked something. It shows that he never really gives up, and I like that. In A&P, I hated the fact that the manager made dress code such a big deal, to the point that he wouldn’t even give service to the girls. I …show more content…
In A&P, Sammy mentioned that the store was empty, leaving him nothing to do but lean on the register. I work at Publix, so that is basically my job in a nutshell. I can relate to Araby as well because just like his uncle disappointed him, I have also had a similar situation. I once turned a paper into someone working in the front office to put in a teacher’s mailbox. If the grade was not turned in, it would result in a zero. Well the woman in the front office never did turn it in, dropping my grade to an 89 B, I was extremely disappointed, and felt as if I shouldn’t depend on anyone

In the second paragraph of John Updike’s “A&P”, Sammy describes the three girls entering the store in such a manner that reveals more about himself than the young women. The way in which he fantasizes Queenie shows narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies where he sees himself as far more unique than everyone else and his superior attitude towards women. Sammy views Queenie as a perfect example of how a woman should be: outspoken, beautiful, confident, and non conforming. His description of the “chunky one” ( line 13) and the “tall one” presents them as lesser than Queenie, this shows that he feels they are also lesser than he.…

Can’t Pay Me Enough The overwhelming part of having a job as a fully-grown working adult, besides having to spend all your money on bills, is having to put up with the worst types of people simply because you desperately need a paying job. More aptly put, because that worst type of person is usually put in a position of power over you. In the short story “A&P” Sammy had to make a decision, though probably based majorly on his lower half rather than his actual brain, to quit his job due to a strong belief that his supervisor treated a customer unfairly. Sammy was lucky being young means most likely he is without a lot of bills. The Author, John Updike, so easily conveys the setting and era in which this story was written.…

I loved it and was good at it, too. I never fit the norm of girls not being good at math- until sixth grade. The science and social studies teachers paled in comparison to the abhorrent Mrs. B. She perfectly fit the description of the old, snippy, brutal teacher portrayed in movies. It was clear to see that she hated kids and hated her job. I am not just griping and complaining because I did not like her as a person; she ranks right up there as one of the worst teachers ever.…

Excess in anything is a defect. Pride is a feeling that every individual possesses. However, it is entirely based on what side of the spectrum the individual hauls that feeling to. Sammy from John Updike’s “A&P” and Sylvia from Toni Cade Bambara’s “The Lesson”, portray a great sense of gratification in their personalities and end up on the negative side of the spectrum, where they are bound to face difficulties in their respective lives. However, Destiny’s observation based on the quotation: “Pride (arrogance) comes before Destruction...and a haughty spirit, before a fall”, is partly correct as the quotation applies to Sammy on a larger scale, but applies to Sylvia on a smaller note.…
