In 1941, John heard about the war in Europe. John discussed with Annie about his decision on going to war (Tilton, 2001). John quit college and signed with the U.S Army Air Corps. (Tilton, 2001). Signing with them and never getting orders by 1942, John signed with the Navy (Tilton, 2001). Navy gave orders back to Glenn quickly, and started all of his training such as; flying, tactics, navigation, engines, weapons, and bombing (Tilton, 2001). Later Glenn, had gotten impatient with the Navy (Tilton, 2001). He applied for the Marines, and achieved second lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps on March 31, 1943 (Tilton, 2001). John took one day to marry Annie in New Concord, Ohio on April 6, 1943 (Tilton, 2001). John accomplished courses through the two …show more content…
The couple first moved into a hotel on Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, just around the Naval Air Test Center (Tilton, 2001). Easier for John to get back and forth to the base for his duties (Tilton, 2001). John had a boy and a girl named David and Lynn (Tilton, 2001). John was promoted to the captain in the U.S Marines as he was still on home duty (Tilton, 2001). Glenn chose to not make Marines as a career, he decided to do civilian air lines (Tilton, 2001). The war is still going on as this time.

The wars that John was apart of in his young age. John was apart of the Pearl Harbor incident (Tilton, 2001). John took his flying skills to use in the Korean War (Tilton, 2001). Glenn’s last air-to-air combat in history was the only squadron that flew the only missions during the entire war where a four plane Sabre flight scored three confirmed kills (Tilton, 2001). Glenn took these times as excitement to his life.

John was being a test pilot. At the Patuxent base Glenn was testing planes and their designs (Tilton, 2001). John had to test each area of the planes including; Chart of speed, altitude, G’s (the pressure one feels as a result of acceleration), loading, and weapons (system performance) (Tilton, 2001). To really test the plane he had to test under several weather or battle conditions (Tilton, 2001). For two years Glenn was a top test pilot for the Patuxent base (Tilton, 2001).
