John The Hero-Personal Narrative

John was on the way back home from the Movies. Everything seemed normal. It was 8 P.M. and he had finished his movie an hour earlier.

He was in a nonchalant mood. The movie he saw was very exciting and interesting. The part he liked the most was when the hero overcame all his fears and defeated the villain. The audience went crazy and applauded during this scene.

He normally went to the movies alone. He could not remember the last time he took his wife to to the movies or anywhere else. Inside their house, they had their own private lives and each respected the other's privacy. There was a narrow path that branched out from the main road that led to his house. On either side of the path there were vegetable patches. It was difficult to navigate the path at night. His pocket light lit the way, projecting a consistent beam of light. During this time, John felt a small paucity come upon him along with an acrid smell in the air.

As he pointed his torch in that direction he saw a shadow of a man standing just below the trees. Except it wasn’t a man.

It had the shape of a man in a black suit with a headless body. At this point John was completely frozen in time. He felt as if he was staring at this figure for hours however it had been only a couple seconds. In a blink of an eye the figure began running toward him with great speed.

John let out a drastic scream. He contemplated trying to fight the monster. However, he dropped his torch and fell back. He almost went into a stupor. The torch fell on the ground and flickered for a second but continued to illuminate the grass. John’s wife was inside must have not heard his scream. He picked himself up and stumbled towards the door. He banged the door as hard as he could. His wife opened the door.

“What’s the problem” she asked.

“There is a strange creature outside coming for us” he replied.

"What! she said

Joseph Campbell, the creator of the hero’s journey, did a lot of research on ancient mythology. He discovered that many heroes travel the same paths to becoming a hero. Campbell decided that heroes come across many challenges that are put into stages and in those stages the hero grows closer to the reward at the end. I am definitely not a hero, but my journey of finding Christ and giving my life to him has absolutely made me into a better person overall. As I look at my journey of finding Christ, I see that it has many similarities to Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.…
