John The Baptist Beliefs

John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin who preached repentance in the Judean desert and baptized those who confessed their sins in the Jordan River (Elwell and Yarbrough 109). He had a special call on his life “to bear witness about the light” (English Standard Version, John 1.8) of Jesus (Foster 65) and is recorded in all four of the Gospels of the New Testament. John’s entire ministry is a perfect example of the faithful servitude Christ calls each believer’s life to illustrate.

The Gospel of Luke records that even as a baby yet unborn, John “leaped for joy” (Lk. 1.44) at the presence of the Jesus’ mother Mary. Once he was born “his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed” (Lk. 1.64) to speak blessings to God. So apparent from birth was the fact that “the hand of the Lord was with [John]” (Lk. 1.66). God had ordained John’s life for special use, just as He preordains all mankind’s individual destinies.

He never sought any fame, and even stressed that Jesus’ followers “must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3.30). John displayed perfect humility and submission to his call. When he was baptizing and Jesus appeared, at first John said that he himself needed to be baptized by the Lord. But upon Christ declaring that in order to “fulfill all righteousness” (Mtw. 3.15) He must be baptized, John immediately acquiesced. It is a testament to John’s faithful heart that he obeyed the Lord’s command without hesitation or question, a characteristic that most of Jesus’ own disciples could not

John's relationship with the church during the latter years of his life was a rather turbulent one, which underwent several changes. The turmoil began upon Hubert Walter's death in 1205, when it could not be decided who was going to be the new Archbishop of Canterbury. It could be argued that this was a change in John's relationship with the church, but it is perhaps more significant that it was the catalyst for a huge chain of events that would change John's relationship with the Church more significantly. Some historians hold the view that 'the basic cause of the quarrel was the issue of who was to appoint the archbishop of Canterbury when Hubert Walter died in 1205'.1 The schism created by the opposing opinions on who was to be elected as Archbishop of Canterbury was hugely significant, and in a letter to from Pope Innocent III to the bishops in England, in 1207, Innocent writes that John is 'persecuting'2 Stephen Langton.…

The Book of John is foundational to the Christian faith. As a foremost document declaring the deity of Jesus, the text decisively establishes that He is God. Contained in the book, there are clear declarations by Jesus where He uses the name of God for Himself. By using the Old Testament name of God, “I AM,” Jesus is speaking in a style that presents Himself as deity. One place where this testimony is undisputable is in the description of the Good Shepherd.…

The first way that John is different is in his interpretation of religion. John feels that if he is presented with reasonable evidence to distrust Reverend Parris, then he has no obligation to attend every Sunday service, or have the Reverend baptize his sons. This is shown by the quote: “I’ll like it not that Parris should lay a hand upon my baby. I see no light of God in that man. I’ll not conceal it” (Miller 1277).…

John 6:1-14 serves as a “reminiscent of the miraculous feeding through Moses” during the wandering in the wilderness “following their exodus from Egypt and preceding their entrance into the promised land” (Exodus 16:4-36), events commemorated by the Passover feast (Heil, 53). In John 6:1-14, Jesus feeds a crowd of about five thousand (6:10) with the overabundance of bread and fish (6:5-13) when the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near (6:4). All the events of John 6 are placed in a Passover context (6:4). The fact that a large crowd of people was following Jesus and seeing the signs He was performing on the sick (6:2) tells readers of the further signs: the theme of believing in Jesus as the sacrificial Passover lamb of God central to…

Gordon’s purpose in writing The Master Plan of Evangelism was to examine the evangelism principles used by Jesus Christ (called “The Master” by Dr. Gordon in the book) during the days of His flesh. Dr. Coleman emphasizes the fact that his purpose was not to study and write about the methods used by Jesus but rather the principles which governed the methods. The Gospel accounts of Jesus’ evangelistic ministry are the single source used by Dr. Coleman in this volume. Jesus’ plan while He walked the earth was the focused mission of the salvation of the world.…
