John the Apostle was born to his mother, Salome, and his father, Zebedee, around 6 A.D. in Bethsaida, Syria. John the Apostle is also called John the Evangelist, John of Patmos, the Beloved Disciple, and the Apostle of Charity. John’s family was falling into poverty during John’s childhood. John worked with his brother and dad as a fisherman in the Sea of Galilee to support his family. John had one sibling named James. James was also known as James the Son of Zebedee and James the Greater. James was one of the first Apostles to die as a martyr. They were also cousins of Jesus because John’s mom, Salome, was the sister of Jesus’ mother, Mary. After their jobs as fishermen, John and James became followers of John the Baptist, who later baptized Jesus. After serving John the Baptist for a couple years, John and James were soon called to become followers of Jesus and soon became his Apostles, or Christian missionaries. He was put in prison with Peter, but was later released. John was also exiled to Patmos and put in boiling oil by Emperor Dometian of Rome, but survived. Patmos is a small Greek island in the Aegean Sea. John founded many churches in Asia working continuing to do his mission as an Apostle of Jesus. He also baptized many Christians in Samaria, which was a city in the Northern Kingdom of Israel. After being worn out from his countless missions across the world, John’s life ended. John the Apostle died in Ephesus, Turkey around 100 A.D. He died peacefully in his house, which was unlike the deaths of the other apostles. John outlived all the other Apostles living to be around 100 years old. John was the only Apostle that did not die a martyr’s death. After he was buried, a church was built over John’s tomb. The Feast Day of John the Apostle is December 27. John the Apostle is the Patron Saint of Asia
