John Sutter was a German man that found gold on his land and started the gold rush. He fled from Bern, Switzerland because of bankruptcy and left his wife and five kids. John fled in 1834 and came to California in 1849. He pretended he was a Swiss Guard officer forced to leave the French Revolution of 1830. Sutter convinced the Governor to give him 48,400 acres of land and got the land.
The land that Sutter gained was in Sacremento near the American River. He made it a fort for refugees
