John Stewart Language Analysis

Have you ever enthusiastically followed a series of videos or dramas, which unfortunately is made in another language? Video sharing has become a significant part of people’s daily entertainment in the modern society, and such need created an emergence of abundant video producers for the need of various types of video. However, due to the process of globalization and introduction of the internet, people also began to find their own favorite series often made in a language beyond their lingual capabilities. For example, large number of American teenagers eagerly follow Japanese anime, and in China, some (in fact, roughly a million) people even find interest in Jon Stewart’s television shows! Nevertheless, the works and details in this process remain in abundance. Firstly, the structural differences between languages is easy for new translators to overlook. For instance, phrases such as “good good study, day day up” can make sense in Chinese, but is not acceptable in the English language (by the way, the phrase “long time no see” is in fact an example of poorly translated Chinese phrases, but it ended up to be so popular that nowadays it is considered acceptable); on the other hand, while English sentences can be theoretically infinitely long through the use of phrases, conjunctive words, semicolons, etc., the sentences in Chinese have a somehow strict length limit that one would have to cut a long sentence into shorter pieces. Then, you must also study the tone and emotion of the original speaker and use similar tones. First, you have to be aware of the length of each line. If a sentence is too long, it can easily overhang the edge of the video and cause words on both ends to be trimmed. When such situation happens, you will need to cut the line into multiple segments and display them upon the screen one after another. On the other hand, you must be careful about the CPS, which is an abbreviation of “consonant per second”. This number tells the length (or in specific, number of consonants) of the line in comparison with how much time each line is displayed. When the CPS number is higher than eighteen, it usually is a sign showing that the line was not given enough time to display on the screen, or a line is too long. You may solve the problem by setting the time beginning the line earlier and ending later or cut the line into many segments. Lastly, in some cases, it is also beneficial to edit the font, size, and color of the lines—you may even find it great to add special effects! Adding these extra things may not actually be needed to convey the meaning of a scene in the video, but they do often bring pleasing effects and you would definitely receive appreciation for doing
