Of Mice and Men has some uninteresting side characters with little to no influence to the overall story. These characters include Whit, Carlson, and The Boss. Whit’s only role in the story is when Curley asks him where Curley’s wife is. Carlson has more Influence in the story due to the fact that he offers to put Candy's dog down and to give him a puppy as a replacement. The gun Carlson uses to put candy’s dog down has significance to the story because it is used to kill Lennie. Carlson still has lack of character. Readers of the novel never see any other aspects of his personality other than the fact that he is not a nice person. This situation is seen in many different pieces of literature such as Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and even Hamlet. Of mice and men has two instances where this is seen. First is when Curley's wife marries him out of spite due to an argument with her mother over a different man.That decision causes her to be very unhappy and lonely which leads to her second impulsive decision. She goes into the barn with Lennie even though she has an idea what Lennie is capable of. She had seen what he had done to Curley’s hand. When Curley’s wife enters the barn, she finds out that Lennie had accidentally killed Candy’s puppy. She should have realized that he was dangerous and left. However due to her loneliness she stays to talk with Lennie which leads to him also accidentally killing
