Do you think it would be important for Americans to see and understand parts of the country where they do not live ? I believe that it would be important for Americans to travel around and see how others live. This generation has a history of not knowing alot about things that don't occur to them. John Steinbeck and His Uses of Foreshadowing Without delay, migrant workers have started becoming more popular, even having been made into novels; including, A Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord, and also The Grapes of Wrath, and Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck. In one of these books, Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck uses foreshadowing. Firstly, foreshadowing is a clever device used by an author to hint to the reader, that something will happen. In the book Of Mice and Men the main characters, George and Lennie, who are migrant workers, want to live on on their own piece of land. However, trouble -that usually follows them- catches up to them, so one thing leads to another, causing them to lose all possibility in their dream.…

It all had started when we went to the bar after the incident with Lennie, George was semi drunk but he told us the story of how George and Lennie came to us. “It all started when we were on the road and the bus driver left us behind,” he said as I listened in. “We were walking on the road and the sun was setting, we stopped up for camp,” George said as I thought about George’s unstable emotions. What I thought was that if Lennie was with George all those years, even when they were young children, did George ever think of this kind of reckless and sad future? “Lennie stupidly dipped his fingers into some strange lake, luckily it was running,” George said laughing.…

Life during World War II was a time unlike any other. American author, John Steinbeck, gave up a life of fame and riches to follow troops around the Eastern hemisphere and document their journeys. Though there are many sources a person could go to for information about the war, Steinbeck’s account goes into great detail about what life was actually like for an American solider during the war. On his journeys, Steinbeck recorded many aspects of the war that would otherwise go unnoticed. Throughout Steinbeck’s travels, he records accounts of how soldiers adjusted to military life, how life continued during the war, and how the soldiers reacted during combat.…

“The Pedestrian” supports this argument because almost all of the people in the story are doing this except Leonard Mead. What Steinbeck is trying to say in his quote is that people do not want to stand out. So they always stay inside with the people they trust and use electronics so they don’t have to go face to face with others. In “The Pedestrian”, Leonard Mead always walks alone at night, on his journey the author describes Meads walks by writing about the houses, the author writes that “on his way he would see the cottages and homes with their dark windows, and it was not unequal to walking through a graveyard where only the faintest glimmers of firefly lights appeared in flickers behind the windows.” It’s saying that they all stay inside afraid to be out in the real world and just stay with their TVs as entertainment.…

Steinbeck would say that America mostly discredits diversity. He also would say that America is a melting pot but that there is nothing expressing what makes our “pot” so special. In the passage, he describes the makeup of the American society; although the majority of the population comes from a different country, Americans generalize characteristics “regardless of their states, their social financial status, their education, their religion and their political convictions.” Steinbeck almost criticizes how alike Americans are, despite our different origins, when he discusses how unalike other countries’ citizens are, because the citizens have diverse origins and diverse characteristics.…

The Electoral College is a system whose constitutionality has been disputed for years; especially since 2000. The Electoral College is founded in Article II of the United States Constitution. The number of electors for each state in the Electoral College is equal to the number of representatives that state has Congress (U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1, Clauses 2 and 3). The people of the United States vote for their electors, but the electors vote for the president. Thus, under the Electoral College, the people of the U.S. do not directly vote for their president.…

It is the outsiders of these texts however, that provide us with the greatest insights into the challenges of caring and provide us with a lens through which we view the love of these relationships. Steinbeck uses his outsiders as a metaphor for the larger world; Crooks accepts both his isolation and judgement, referring to himself as a ‘nigger’ . For the reader, this is a warning it is difficult to love people who are unusual and Steinbeck suggests that we can only be as kind as the world we live in. In contrast, the message that Halstrom offers is far more hopeful. On the one hand, he presents us with a united family who are able to face the most difficult of circumstances by supporting each other, but on the other, he offers a beautiful and…

My Responsibility to America George Bernard Shaw once said, “We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility of our future,” I believe he meant that it is not enough to know where we came from or how we got here; we must actively expand to maintain and improve our quality of life. As Americans, I believe, we need to participate in all aspects of life, respect ideals and people, and obey all established laws. As Americans, one of our responsibilities to America is participation. Participation may include lots of things such as your community, politics, and even your school. Participating in your community might be as little as helping someone across the street, or as big as setting up a local event.…

I believe that Steinbeck wanted to name this novel, Something That Happened, because the story consists of many things that happened. The whole story is based off something that happened. Different parts of the story is based of a situation, the thing that happened in weed. The thing that happened with mice, the arguments, the conversations, the dog and Curley’s wife.
