The reason the men don 't talk to her is because her husband threatens anyone that talks to her and because all the men think of her as a tramp. The only person she could only talk to is her husband, but in the book she admits that she does not like him. Unfortunately, Curley 's wife does not have a name. The reason Steinbeck did not give her a name is because he wanted to symbolize her as isolation, not having a name takes away the identity and significance of a person. All the men on the ranch think of her as a big attention seeking tramp. When George and lennie first encounter her George turns to Lennie and says, “ I seen ‘ em poison before, but i never seen no piece of jailbait worse than her. You leave her be.” That quote shows that after encountering her once people automatically try to avoid her. What the characters in the book don 't understand is the reason she approaches the people on the ranch is because she is begging for attention and conversation, but they confuse that as flirtation. He makes both of the character have different characteristics that makes them stand out from the rest of the other characters. Due to Curley 's wife being the only girl on the ranch and having an overprotective husband she lives most of her life in isolation, which causes her to seek a lot of attention throughout the book. Crooks lives in isolation because of his skin color and being born in a time period when African Americans are looked down upon. This causes Crooks to become paranoid when someone approaches him because he 's used to people rejecting him. Steinbeck ends the story with each character in pain in someway, Curley’s wife 's last moments were the happiest she had in a long time. Her last moments was her having a real connection with another person, unfortunately she died right after. Crooks stays alive at the end of the story but his last moments were in his room when Curley 's wife reminds him he is worthless in society. Steinbeck 's story shows how even in today 's modern society, everyone needs to have someone to talk to or else isolation can damage that person. Human communication is important, if a person does not get enough of that than their life becomes a living
