The importance of friendship in one’s life is comparable by no other relationship. Friendship is pure, forgiving and devout. This idea of friendship is undoubtedly illustrated in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. In the novel, George and Lennie tirelessly work to have a piece of land to call their own, traveling across the country for work. George and Lennie are truly devoted to one another and unwaveringly care for one another, and have proven so multiple times throughout the novel. Another relationship that exhibits devotion is that of the main characters in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. George and Lennie have traveled across the country in search of working. Lennie is dependent on George, and would not be able to survive without him. This constant need for care strains George and often prevents him from securing a job. During their travels, it is proven that they have a strong relationship because, despite his quirks, George loves and cares for Lennie. George does not harass Lennie when he has the dead mice, even though he isn’t supposed to have them. When he takes away Lennie’s mouse, George tells Lennie “ I ain’t takin’ it away jus’ for meanness. That mouse ain’t fresh, Lennie” (Steinbeck.9). While they are traveling, Lennie pockets a mouse to pet and instead of petting it, ends up snapping its neck. George shows his love for Lennie by not persecuting him for his wrongdoings. George knows that yelling at Lennie will only distress Lennie even more. Not only does George show how he cares for Lennie but he also displays his acceptance of Lennie. Lennie has many quirks, and George is able to love and care for him despite that. Not only does George not harass Lennie, but he also doesn’t desert Lennie after what he does in their previous hometown of Weed. Even though Lennie’s careless actions cost George his job, he didn’t leave Lennie (7). Due to his undeveloped social skills, Lennie misbehaved and initiated unrest in the town of Weed.
