Good, Evil, or Both?
For some it is easy to pick out the evil within others even if they only have an ounce of it within their bodies. The evil they can see can be as simple as refusing to clean their room or it can be more extreme such as robbing a bank. People can also find it easy to see the good within others. The good that they can see can be as simple as helping clean up a spill or it can be volunteering at the local food pantry. Well created fictional characters also represent this dimensionality as well. In the book, Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses his characters to show that all people have a good and evil side to them.

An example in the book of when George showed his evil side was when he shoots Lennie, "And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie 's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadies. He pulled the trigger" (Steinbeck 106). This act of cruelty is not an act of compassionate because he could have allowed the other men to kill Lennie instead of doing it himself. Another example of George 's evil side being present is the way he talks to Lennie within the book. When he talks to Lennie, he does not talk instead he yells at him with anger, " 'Lennie! ' he said sharply. 'Lennie, for God ' sakes don 't drink so much '" (Steinbeck 3). The way George is talking to Lennie about drinking the water shows that he is truly evil because he is becoming very anger and upset with a minor issue. Therefore, throughout the course of the book, George shows both a good and evil side copious …show more content…

He uses the way Candy treats his dog as an example of the good within Candy. However, he also shows the evil within Candy by using the way he talks to Curley 's wife. Additionally, he uses the idea that George takes care of Lennie since his Aunt Clara dies as an example of good within George. Plus, he uses the fact that George shoots Lennie as an example of George 's evil side within the book. Next time someone says hello, remember there is always that evil lying underneath the good that is easier to
