Identity does not grow until it has taken root in belonging.Home is a place you grow up wanting to leave and grow old wanting to get back to. When travelling, people often subconsciously change in order to fit into new environments. They must have adventures to know where they genuinely correspond. Eventually, once they have found genuine comfort in their new environment, a new home is created.Belonging is one of the consequential themes that emerge in The Eagle of the Ninth. It demonstrates how three main characters--Cub, Cottia and Marcus-- display the feeling of where they belong through their actions.

Belonging is most significantly illustrated through Cub, who had grown fond of his caretaker and,when given a choice to be set free,remains loyal to his guardian.An example of how he feels like he belongs to Marcus is how he “thrusted his lowered head between Marcus’s knees” (84).In this position, a dog is utterly defenseless and at his master’s mercy; dogs only do this when they know they can trust someone.
