I really enjoyed watching the video. The purpose of John Sinnett 's was that he wanted his students to see that he was engaged just as the students were. From the video, we can see that John is very passionate about his kindergarten students. During his lesson, he gets down on the carpet on the same level as his student to make them feel engaged. This is something that is very important because students are so to teachers telling what to do. However, John decided to structure his class differently. He was on the children level so that the students can see that he was motivated about the lesson just like them. For me, I believe that John was doing the right thing by modeling the process. we can see from the video that he takes his students through a step-by-step process for writing, in which they begin with an illustration. I believe that this is perfect. Students in kindergarten are not really good spellers, therefore, if they draw out what they want to say it will help them. they students are simply drawing a picture and the picture is helping them help for their writing. That is what John did with his class. I like the way John structured his lesson because he was helping his students get their message down on paper. And that is one of the most important things. I also enjoyed how John was able to have all of the students listen to one another while they were sharing. Therefore, the purpose of his lesson was that he wanted his class to see the concept of listening, speaking, reading, and writing during a lesson. I realized that these students are in kindergarten and they need a lot of visuals to rely on. Since this is a kindergarten class I would make sure that I have visuals and writing samples so that my students understand what I am expecting from them. If the students were a little older then I believe I will not need the visuals as much but since these are young students, they need as much assistance as possible. I would have a chart and so my students step by step what I will require for them to do in their assignments. I will still make sure that my students see that I am a part of their class just like John did however, I will have a little more structured. I will tap into my student’s prior knowledge to see what they know about different topics. Tapping into my student’s knowledge will help to feel more engaged in the class as well. It will also help students make connections to things that we are talking about in the
