John Siegel Experience

I relate best to the short excerpt from Dr. John Siegel. He describes how the discussion at a meeting among colleagues at a hospital began to digress as the subject was changed from the main focus of the meeting (educational experience for patients) to side issues such as frustration with the medical system. By reminding his superiors of their primary goal (to provide excellent medical care to their patients) he inadvertently prompted them to consider the common values that they share which led them to their chosen profession. This got the meeting back on track and the committee was able to successfully restructure their education plan. The sub-strategy that Dr. Siegel employed was “Values Guide Us.” This principal is evident in my life and I have been fortunate enough to see concrete examples of it. There is one story in particular that reminds me of Dr. John Siegel’s situation. One-day last summer while working for the Boulder County trails crew, my crew, as well as one more, were tasked with moving a 1-ton bridge using grip-hoists (manually-operated winches) and it proved to be and much more daunting task than we had anticipated. After many failed attempts to move the bridge, frustration among crew members was at an all-time high. We were working near a high-use mountain bike trail, and several …show more content…
This illustrates that I am in touch with my own guiding values, and this activity has also made me realize how I much I value confidence. If I had not been bold enough to stand up and tell me superiors that we need to take a step back and calm down, the situation would have probably continued until something went wrong. I also hold respect and equality in high regard, so as soon as I saw those values being neglected I knew I had to speak

Well-accredited journalist for the New York Times, David Brook's, in his opinion column “It’s Not About You”, emphasizes the over protection that parents and teachers fixate on college students. Brook's purpose is to bring society clarity by encouraging societies superiors to allow college students to have more freedom before they set their sails in treacherous waters. With this being said, Brook's uses pertinent diction and parallel structure to mock society’s tendency to coddle college students prior to their graduation. Brook's begins his column indicating that “America’s colleges” have sent out yet “another class of graduates off into the world” but something still doesn’t seem quite right. I believe that CTE prepares secondary and postsecondary students of all diverse backgrounds to obtain gainful employment and creates an ultimate experience of knowledge and development. I have had the opportunity to work in a CTE field of healthcare for my adult life. I believe there is no better educational system to have real measurable growth for many students than CTE. Many of the students and graduates I have had the opportunity to work with would have never had the chance for personal and financial growth if it were not for a CTE programs.…

This way of thinking is based on an individual as a good person or a role with specific duties (Edge and Groves, 2007). In other words, each profession in healthcare has a set of virtues that the professional can adopt in practice (Edge and Groves, 2007). In the movie, this theory is displayed when the doctors are presented. The doctors actively display their virtues by helping student doctors learn about the disease, being honest with the parents about the situation, and being neutral when the parents start to fight back. Another secondary character, Lorenzo’s friend from Africa, shows Virtue.…
