In 1857 “a third son of William, Thomas Shields Bisland purchased Fairfax Plantation, located in St. Mary Parish from Joshua Baker” … the father-in-law of Thomas’ brother, William Alexander Bisland. “Baker, who served a brief term as a military governor of Louisiana in 1868, played an important role in the maintenance of the Bisland plantations during the war.” Scarborough speculates his appointment as a Unionist Governor during Reconstruction helped to keep Hope Farm and Aragon as working plantations. 17 On January 24th, 1858, Thomas married Margaret Cerilla (also spelled Cyrilla in other sources) Brownson in Brooklyn, New York. William A. continued to pay down his debt and prospered. The finances of John Rucker Bisland do not seem to be as well documented. Perhaps this is because John did not incur the level of debt that his brother did. John “Jack” Brownson Bisland is born , on April 26, 1858, at Aragon Plantation to John Rucker Bisland and Fannie Brownson Bisland. He is the third child and second son. Many of the Bisland descendants stayed in Louisiana and Mississippi, many of the descendants of Jack Bisland still reside in Terrebonne Parish today. William A. Bisland and John R. Bisland traveled with their families from Louisiana to New York, through the Port of Havana to the Port of New York aboard the Steamship DeSoto on May 19, 1860.

Records for Terrebonne Parish, 7th Ward show William A., age 34, listed as a Planter; wife Caroline, age 28; son Calvin, age 10; son, Baker, age 9; daughter, Marguerite, age 7; and daughter Jane, age 5. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled with insulin injections as well as exercise to control weight loss. An herbal remedy known as bilberry has been used to control blood sugar levels. Bilberry is also known as; European blueberry, huckleberry, vaccimium myrtillus, and vaccinium corymbosum.¹ Bilberry ranked fourth as the most common remedy to improve glycaemic control in hyperglycaemic subjects with or without a diagnosis consisting of impaired glucose tolerance or diabetes.² Bilberry is more commonly known for improving vision in individuals with diabetes but has also been researched to improve blood glucose and controlling type 2 diabetes; due to its anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects.³ In regards to diabetes and insulin control, bilberry has been used to control blood sugar levels because they contribute to lowering glucose response after the consumption of a high sugar meal.
