Because Arthur Miller’s criticism of the informant relies on principal, not circumstance, his argument is more persuasive than Elia Kazan’s support of the informer. In On the Waterfront, Terry is asked to testify against Johnny Friendly on countless occasions, but he consistently declines. Once the mob kills his brother, Charley, he reacts violently. To avoid a fight, Father Barry says, “You want to hurt Johnny Friendly?... Do you really wanna finish him... for what he did to Charley...?…

On the topic of blindness, Miller's argument that one knows who he is before even opening his eyes in the morning is very interesting. It refutes Weirob's idea that seeing something is needed to realize its existence. The person who has his eyes shut in the morning, still knows that it is him, even without seeing his body. A blind person, never sees his body yet, still knows of his existence and consciousness. So it makes sense then, to say that even without seeing something, one can be consciousness of its existence.…

To determine if Arthur Miller’s world, or the Puritan world, is different than our own, one must look to the events that are occurring around our world today. Recently, the President of the United States declared an immigration ban that would not allow people of certain countries, specifically countries whose main religion being Islam, from entering the country. The President’s executive orders on the immigration ban perfectly mirrors the religious persecution casted upon the Jamestown settlers because the refugees of these other countries are fleeing to find the freedom to practice their own religion. Going back to the question at hand, Arthur Miller’s Puritan world is scarily alike to our own world today. For one, people are still facing…

Through the language of Oscar Wilde, "the truth is rarely pure and never simple." In other words, the truth will always carry some emotional baggage, and as a result, it will hardly ever be unadulterated or effortless. It is hard to tell the truth at times for the reason that we, as people, fear consequences and are always seeking to protect ourselves or others; however, it is no easier to lie. The guilt that comes with lying will eat away at you until you make the choice to either do something or ignore it. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, guilt overwhelms John Proctor for many things and his numerous internal conflicts inspire the decisions that he makes throughout the play.…

Arthur Miller would take an instant opposition to the HUAC testimonies and the ongoing blacklisting that occurred in the film and theatrical industries, as well as the opinion of people like McCarthy and Walter. In 1950, Miller wrote and produced An Enemy of the People, which is directly based on Henrik Ibsen’s play of the same name. While this play was received moderately well, it was largely ignored due to its lack of commercial success, which kept HUAC from directly attacking Miller. Instead, eyes turned towards Kazan as the director and major financial backer of the project. Both Miller and Kazan decided to go on hiatus after An Enemy to avoid the heat of anti-communist critics, but Miller couldn’t stay silent for…

The following statement, “The crucible is essentially about courage, weakness, and truth,” is correct. In the crucible the attributes that the characters show/have aren't necessarily the best, yet some show the attribute of courage, Mary Warren and John Proctor show this attribute. Other times some characters show the trait of weakness, those characters are John Proctor, Mary Warren, and Ann Putnam. There is a lot of both those characteristics, but what mostly lacks in this play is one simple thing, the truth. Abigail Williams is a perfect example of this.…
