Even though Rhee resigned long time before the coup was conducted, the roots of it date back to his regime. Rhee established a police state on which his officers ʺwere ruthless and brutal in the suppression of Rhee’s political opponents and the treatment of ordinary citizensʺ (Kim 2006, 621). In the same way, under the name of a liberal democratic system, he often oppressed political dissidents. Moreover, he ruled under the idea of defender of South Korea from North Korea’s communist regime. This situation started to be unbearable when Rheeʹs and his ruling Liberal Party economic development plan failed.
