In 1779 he became captain of the Bonhomme Richard. "I have not yet begun to fight!" was the famous reply of Captain John Paul when he was told to surrender as he and his crew engaged in a desperate battle with a British warship off the northern coast of England during the American Revolutionary war. Lieutenant Colonel John Laurens was one of the most influential figures in the American Revolution and also one of the most overlooked; his views and the actions he took against slavery, despite the opposition he faced, were some of the first steps to freeing slaves during the war. John Laurens was twenty-two at the start of the American Revolutionary War, studying law in England. After reading Common Sense by Thomas Paine, Laurens became determined to return home to fight for his freedom despite his father’s refusal. He returned in August of 1777, serving on the staff of George Washington. The first time he ever saw war in action was during the Battle of Brandywine that September.…

The novel The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer tells the story of a young woman’s experience at a concentration camp during the German Occupation. One of the characters, Elizabeth McKenna, was arrested and sent to Ravensbrück for helping hide a Polish slave worker in her neighbor, Peter Sawyer’s, home. Elizabeth was very nurturing, “She cut off his clothes and burned them. She bathed him, shampooed his hair with tar soap-that was a jolly mess, we did laugh, if you can believe it”(Shaffer and Barrows 217). This quote reflects her personality and how she would jeopardize her life for others.…
Glenn Van Dekken once said, “Loyalty is what makes us trust. Trust is what makes us stay. Staying is what makes us love, and love is what gives us hope.” Two of the most important characters in the adventurous book are Sir Percy Blakeney and Marguerite Blakeney. I think that the campers gained more from the experience at Camp Wiggen than Ron Jones did. I think this because all their life, they had been seen as kids with disorders, and they never got to experience being a part of something that most people would think they coyld not do. Camp Wiggen gave them the chance to do that, and they were treated like normal kids and not kids who were dying. A quote to show their experience is “These kids had never been news. Most had been family secrets.…

Even when the book says how a character is going to die, they still put a different spin on it to keep the reader on edge.…

Captain John Smith was known for his strong guidance as well as his honor. He was attentive of the risk that his connection to the events could affect how he discusses them. Being too personal to the subject material can affect the narrator’s ability to carry a balance in the narrative. One way Smith attempts to refrain this is to remove himself as much as attainable from the narrative, deciding to write in a third-person narration rather than the more familiar first-person narration.…
1,150 miles of nothing but ice cold snow, and determination. This is the reality of the Iditarod, a race the main character of my book Gary Paulsen competes in. This race takes place in Alaska where elite runners face the hardest terrain in the world and cover 1,150 miles of land with their dogs. In this book, Gary starts training with practically no experience and no racing dogs to run the longest race in existence but, ends up not only running the race once but twice and wins the second time. This shows the determination of Paulsen along with his refusal to give up.…
