It enables secondary victims to talk to other individuals who are going through some similar situations and it allows for them to "deal" with the situation. Every situation is different, yes, but having support groups allows for society to try and help the victim and the victim’s family get through the ordeal the best they can. Support groups are a very important support network in relation to helping families and loved ones dealing with a loss. Secondary victims need just as much support as primary victims. Since they have not dealt with the crime directly secondary victims do not understand what the primary victim was going through. The support groups are there for these people so they know they are not alone. One support group that was formed in 1978 was Parents of Murdered Children (POMC) (Parents Of Murdered Children, Inc., n.d.). It is a group formed to remember and support victim’s family members, it primarily is in support of child victims. This group would have been extremely beneficial for John, Patsy and Burke as it would have helped them talk to parents in similar circumstances as to what they are going through. If Patsy, John, and Burke did utilize the support groups it would have been beneficial. It would have allowed them to communicate with parents of deceased children who have been through similar events, like the Ramsey’s were going through. Even if the Ramsey’s did not become involved with support groups, if they spoke to anyone (therapist) it would have been beneficial to them. John would have been experiencing a different grief than Patsy was, as he was the first individual to find JonBenets’ body. Just as Patsy would have a different grief, as she was the one who found the ransom note first. It is important for secondary victims to have just as many networks for support as primary
