John Proctor's Role In The Crucible

Arthur Miller’s play, “The Crucible”, is a very intriguing story. Once you start reading it’s hard to stop. John Proctor is a very influential character in this play. He plays a tremendous role and begins to set the whole tone. John Proctor faces many obstacles such as committing adultery, confessing to wife, and confessing to the court which he had to choose whether to live or die, which all led to his final decision. John Proctor is a man of his word and will not let anyone tell him what to do and how it should be done.

For instance, John Proctor is a filled with pride, but he won’t let it get in the way when he’s wrong about certain situations, such as committing adultery with his former servant, Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams

John tries his hardest to prove to his wife everyone in the town that Abigail isn’t as innocent as she plays to be. Proctor has shared his intimate moments between him and Abigail with Elizabeth. Abigail has tried to deny her relations with John numerous times, but John knows all of her tactics and what she does to try and prove everyone wrong, but herself, Proctor says, “I am only wondering how I may prove what she told me, Elizabeth. If the girl’s a saint now, I think it is not easy to prove she’s a fraud, and the town gone so silly. She told it to me in a room alone - I have no proof for it .(53).” Proctor is trying extremely hard to prove to Elizabeth that it wasn’t just his doing. He was lured in by Abigail´s seductive ways which led to the mutual agreement between him and Abigail. Elizabeth is giving John a really hard time. John is doing everything in his power to try and win Elizabeth’s trust back, but she isn’t making it very easy. Elizabeth dwells on the past and makes it awfully hard for them as a family to work it out and move past his mistakes. Proctor confesses to being alone with Abigail for only a moment. Elizabeth is taken back by what was just said from Proctors mouth, Elizabeth is in shock and says, “You were alone with her? Proctor is a man of pride and has no problem setting the record straight between him and everyone that has a problem with him. This is one of the biggest obstacles he has to face. Him confessing to the court that he commit adultery is serious business because he went against the ten amendments and committed adultery which is against all of their beliefs. Proctor is exhausted and tired of trying to keep his secret between him and Abigail that he gives in and tells the court. John has now stirred up a ton of trouble which gets Abigail on edge. Abigail begins to tense up and starts to deny everything that is coming out of Proctors mouth. Abigail is trying to change the subject to his new servant, Mary Warren. Abigail blames Mary for all the commotion and trouble that has been going on in the town. As Proctor hears this he begins to get highly upset and tells the court in detail what really happened between him and Abigail. Once he uttered words out his mouth about him and her she became as silent as a mouse. John yells “ It is a whore! (110)”. Filled with anger and hatred Proctor confesses in front of everyone and Judge Danforth that he has committed a sin that will never be forgiven. John’s real reason behind confessing is romantic, He is confessing to free his wife, he confesses by saying, “I have known her, sir. I have known her.
