In the end of The Crucible Arthur Miller leaves his character John Proctor with what seems like an impossible decision. He has to choose between saving himself by admitting to witchcraft, or pleading innocent and facing certain death. In the end he chooses the later of the two, a task that was by no means simple. While it would not have been the right decision for every type of person for a man who so highly regards honestly and who is as prideful as Proctor is, the only decision that could have been right for him was to stick to the truth and accept the consequences that follow.…

Salem in the late 1600s was tortured by witch hunts, with neighbors turning on each other to save themselves from death. Ruled by a theocracy, the Salem community was thoroughly examined to see who was a witch, with reasons ranging from reading a book to murmuring under their breath to not attending church. Nobody was safe, and with everyone lying to protect themselves, the court took drastic measures and sentenced people to hang. John Proctor and Abigail Williams are most directly to blame for the deaths in Salem because John was lacking in faith, Abigail was seeking revenge, and they both kept secrets and lied to protect their name, which led them to be untrustworthy. John Proctor, a farmer and loving father of three sons, was not as faithful as a man was supposed to be during this time in Salem.…

Since evil acts and heretics is the work of the devil, the court and church investigate and convict the accused by sentencing them to death by hanging in the public square in front of everyone. Sacrificing citizens by sentencing the accused to hanging is not the answer to resolve anarchy and control the citizens of Salem. Salem’s religious beliefs and laws dictate the rules that are to be followed by each member of the community.…
