John Proctor's Forgiveness In The Crucible

Imagine if there were a website like Ashley Madison back in the days of the Puritans. In The Crucible, John Proctor, a respected, godly man, became inappropriately involved with a younger woman, Abigail Williams, while he was still married to his wife Goody Proctor. He admitted to the crime and shortly after, the entire town was gossiping about it. Proctor agreed to confess his sin of adultery, but when he is told that it must be a public confession, he backs out to save his and his wife's name. John Proctor was living a lie where he was not always honest with himself; he has to come to terms with his internal struggle with his infidelities, before his wife and God could forgive him. He had committed a sin and needed the forgiveness of God in order to continue with his life journey. He exclaimed, “Then who will judge me? God in Heaven…”(Miller 1270). John had confessed his sins to God and he was forgiven. He had received the most important forgiveness that there was. This was so important to John because he needed the Lord's forgiveness to get into heaven. He was able to receive forgiveness by the strength within himself and with the support of his wife. The final piece of forgiveness that John needed to acquire was from his wife. This was the most important person that he needed to be forgiven by. He had done absolutely nothing to receive the forgiveness from her, but because she loved him and knew that he was truly a good man she forgave him and dismissed his wrong doings. She stated, “Forgive me, forgive me, John- I never knew such goodness in the world” (Miller 1270). The act of Elizabeth seeking forgiveness shows that she has forgiven him and moved passed it and sought forgiveness for herself. John was very blessed to receive her forgiveness in the manner that he did. Forgiveness was such a huge aspect in John's struggles with infidelity. He did not
