John Proctor's Fate

Decent Essays
Hypothetically, Arthur Miller's, The Crucible has the format of a classical tragedy, with John Proctor as the story’s tragic hero. Trustworthy, upbeat, and brusque, Proctor is a good man, but with one tragic flaw. His love for Abigail Williams prompted his affair with his wife, Elizabeth, which established the whole witch accusations. When the trials began, Proctor realized he can cease Abigail’s rage through Salem but only if he admits to committing adultery. In order for an average man to become a tragic hero, he must have a fault that leads to his tragic fate. Johns sin would have had no more serious consequences than the myriad of adulteries that are everyday committed, discovered and passed over.

When they were caught, they made up lies and flipped the accusations on other villagers that they did not like.…

The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a modern American play that explores the common themes of sin and guilt, self-preservation, and protecting one’s reputation that permeated our society during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The evolution of John Proctor’s character demonstrates how an arrogant, weak man with a guilty conscience evolves into a heroic martyr that dies to protect his family and to stop the hysteria of witchcraft that is destroying the town and the lives of his friends. Even though the novel’s namesake, a crucible, is not explicitly used in the story, the audience experiences the symbolism of the protagonist’s moral test as Proctor evolves from a self-centered, cheating adulterer to a moral and honorable family man who truly wants…

There are many heroes in today’s society. Every person can have a different definition of what defines someone as a hero or something as heroic. Grant Wiggins, a local school teacher in A Lesson Before Dying and Jefferson’s friend, has his own definition of what it means to be a hero. It is arguable that there are two predominant heroic characters in the The Crucible, a drama written by Arthur Miller, and in A Lesson Before Dying, a historical fiction written by Ernest J. Gaines, John Proctor and Jefferson. John Proctor is the protagonist in The Crucible whose town is afflicted by the witch trials in 1692, and Jefferson is a main character in A Lesson Before Dying who is a black man on death row in the 1940s south.…
