John Proctor's Downfall

In the play crucible it was one main character who struggled the most out of anyone else throughout the play. This character name is John Proctor. He had a downfall, because he had a problem with both his wife and the town. Out of everyone else in the play he went through trials and tribulations. Multiple people did go through many things, but they relied on john the most. Why is that because at the end of the play when they wanted john to confess.
With his confession it came out of him. He stated “ I lied and sign myself to lies”. What he is trying to say he already lied in the begin about worshipping the devil. It wasn't true even though he only attend church once a month. He wasn't someone in the beginning that people looked up to. For
