From the beginning of The Crucible to the end, John Proctor has been a dominant character throughout all the acts. In such a corrupt society in Salem during that time, John Proctor was one of the most courageous people during that time, standing up for the truth against his wife and many of the other accused. His character and attitude stood out from the rest in Salem, but unfortunately, it leads to his death. Because of the different aspects of John Proctor’s character, it leads to his doom.
The first aspect of John Proctor's character that leads him to his death was his reputation in the town. First and foremost Proctor was one of the most influential people in The Crucible and very critical person during the trials that took place. Similar to his reputation, Proctor had a lot of self-pride. John Proctor didn’t want his name to be ruined, he wanted the best for himself. Again in the scene where Danforth was trying to get Proctor to sign the paper, Proctor speaks a quote that speaks a lot about his character. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name”! Notably, Miller’s use of an anaphora in Proctor's line, appeals to the audience, showing that Proctor is outpouring with anger, confusion, and pride within himself. Proctor knows that if gives them the letter than he would feel terrible knowing that he convicted himself of a wrongdoing that he didn’t do. As the officials lead Proctor up the hill to the gallows, Proctor although scared, Proctor felt at peace with
