Imagine a society where you feel trapped 24/7. Fear and revenge rule the day. It seems like lies are more important than honesty and courage. This is Salem, Massachusetts 1692 during the Salem Witchcraft Trials. No one could escape accusations of witchcraft, not even John Proctor, a man who was really strong in his puritan beliefs. In the play, john did something not a lot of people did, he died for his beliefs. Many people disagreed with him for this choice, Reverend hale, another main character who was very strong in his beliefs, said there was no belief worth dying for. John took such pride in his name and felt like signing the confession paper would be like signing to a lie. When wrestling with whether or not he should falsely confess, he wails, “I have given you my soul; leave me my name” (miller 207)! First of all, a lot of people use to admire John and follow what he did, if he signed to a lie and commit another sin he wouldn 't have a good name. In Salem, you wanted to have a good name, if you didn 't, then you weren 't respected or treated the way you wanted to be treated. Normally, people are scared of what might happen if they do not go along with what is expected of them, so in the end, they don’t stand up for what they believe in. The Crucible, is a great example of someone that goes against fear, and stands up for what they think is right.
