The Crucible, a tragic and engaging story about witchcraft and treachery by Arthur Miller, is where we are introduced to some of the cruelest and worst mistakes ever made in American history. While we are informed of the numerous accusations being given through the town about witches, we learn of the ulterior motives of the accusers, and eventually are taught the truth that they are falsifying these accusations just to save themselves and gain money and land for their families. Throughout this story, we meet a multitude of characters that are, among other qualities, brave, determined and ambitious, but, perhaps the most essential person introduced in The Crucible is one John Proctor, a tragic hero. John Proctor, a noble and renowned character in the town of Salem, is a tragic hero in The Crucible due to both his status in the town and his tragic flaw that, eventually, causes his downfall. John Proctor, our renowned and noble hero, is a well-known member of the community, and, as such, there is a value in accusing his wife of witchery. The Crucible, through all of the hardships and troubles the characters face, shows us that the puritans will always be a part of us. Due to the fact that we, as Americans, have already made these mistakes, we know now what is and is not true and we are aware of what is and is not right. All in all, The Crucible shows us an invaluable story denouncing ulterior motivated lies and displays a true story of treachery and betrayal all centered around the tragic hero, John
