In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, John Proctor is the protagonist because of his drastic change from being selfish and deceptive to being selfless and benevolent towards the end of the story. In act II of the story, through Elizabeth’s words and suspicions the reader is informed on Proctors cowardness in going to the court to prove Abigail's illegitimacy. He is afraid to confront Abigail and the court because he will be tried for lechery as well. When Elizabeth confronts Proctor about her suspicions of him and Abigail she states , “John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not” (Miller 54).
