" Nothing resembles selfishness more closely than self respect. " this quote by George Sand relates closely to John Proctor and his decision to stay an honest man or end his life. Unfortunately for John Proctor selfishness was partly disguise as self respect because He died for his good name without thinking of the consequences of his actions. During the Puritan era John's name was his life credibility and if your name is black and you'd be the outcast of the town and frowned upon.

John Proctor made the wrong choice because not only did it end his life, it also impacted many life negatively and put everyone through more pain.
