“It is a whore!” John Proctor says as he grabs Abigail’s hair. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller John Proctor goes from being the town’s sinner to dying a hero. John Proctor dies a hero. John Proctor is motivated to keep his dignity. This is indicated in act 4. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (p. 1333). As of right now in the story, Proctor doesn't have many choices left, yet he needs to keep his name adequate for his children. John Proctor doesn’t want the written confession he signed posted on the door. If his confession was on the door, the Salem community would have valid evidence to talk terribly about his family for generations to come. Proctor defending his family name brings about his death, but allows him to die a hero. …show more content…
This is shown in act 4 when the narrator says, “His breast heaving, his eyes staring, Proctor tears the paper and crumples it, and he is weeping in fury, but erect.” (p. 1333) John Proctor didn’t want the confession posted on the door, in light of the fact that he didn't want the town to have confirmation that there were witches in Salem despite the fact that there isn't. In addition to the previous quote mentioned in act 4 Danforth says, “Hang them high over the town! Who weeps for theses, weeps for corruption!
