Wrathing and wrangling within the manacles of his mortal skin, John Proctor has indicted himself for lechery and cannot find the rich glow within him to forgive himself, for he sees himself as a damaged and dented individual in the cryptic eyes of God. And as Proctor cringes at the admittance of his own infraction, he paints a scarlet letter upon his white washed and cracking, peeling wall to save his fragile and loyal wife from a purge of envy within the town. Trembling with the epiphany of forgiveness, Proctor has tasted the droplets of clemency from the Lord and his wife when he publicly sacrifices and slashes the only thing that he grasps with a vigorous grip: his name. But, when shackled to another crime of witchery, Proctor protests to libel himself and smear his name again by signing to it, for he already conceded to this fraudulent crime, “I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are!” (132). As the virulent virus continually seeps deeper within the stream of passion, the cure prevails with human sacrifice to frighten the barnacles away. When one sacrifices for others, this antidote to the toxins is injected throughout a crucible as humans finally become able to see the leech that had evaded them. And, with vigor, prideful humans strive to eradicate the malice which had overpowered their weak souls and gave them shame for succumbing to the sham.
