To begin, John Proctor’s excessive pride caused him to be unfaithful to his wife. Beneath Proctor’s skin, the sin of being unfaithful to his wife is slowly devouring him. Proctor started to tell Elizabeth that she had not forgiven him and that she never forgave anything, since Elizabeth says that he is not open with her anymore. This can be seen when Proctor screams, “You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’. Learn charity, woman… I cannot speak but I am doubted, every moment judged for lies, as though I come into a court when I come into this house!” (Miller 852). Elizabeth does not know whether her husband was being honest because she did not know if he still desired Abigail or if he was just too scared to admit it. Proctor knows that he had been unfaithful to his wife when he had an affair with Abigail, but yet he still yells at Elizabeth for having suspicion because he wants his name to be good. He then shuts down Elizabeth by saying, “Oh, Elizabeth, your justice would freeze beer!” (Miller 852). John does not think that his wife’s actions of forgiveness are not loving or kind, they are brutally harsh. John does not feel that his wife has forgiven him, after he has pleaded to be forgiven, while yelling at her. Elizabeth knows that John had an affair with Abigail, but she still hit him hard with her words because Johns pride caused him to deviate from honesty. This caused him to
