The Salem Witch Trials were a brutal time period and should be considered a crime against humanity. In the novel “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller there is a conflict that takes place in Salem Massachusetts 1692. The puritan society was a very strict and religious society making the accusation of witchery very powerful. All of this leads to one question, who was responsible for the Salem Witch Trials? That would be the infamous John Proctor. In the novel John shows several traits the portray the type of man he is. In the novel John shows the traits of Lust, Pride, and Stubbornness which ultimately lead to him kicking the bucket. In the Novel John shows lust throughout many different instances. John has a large ego and plans to hold true to it. In the novel John states “How may I teach them to walk like a man in the world, and I have sold my friends.” (134) John says this as the judges are trying to get him to confess his good name which carries much of the Pride and Respect he has. One other example where john shows his pride is when he states “They think to go like saints. I have not to spoil their names.” (130) This quote is and example of John Proctor trying to uphold his legacy of being respected and that accusing others of a false crime would only cause him to be looked down …show more content…
In the book John is very stubborn and wants things to go his way and this could also be a large part of his reputation in the puritan society. An example of when john shows this trait is when he says “then it is proven! Why must I say it?”(120) This quote shows that John is stubborn and doesn't want to give the court any more evidence of him confessing to a crime he did not commit. Another example of John’s stubborness is when he says “She only pretend to faint, excellency they're all marvelous pretenders” (98) This quote shows that John is being stubborn and trying to show the court that the girls are lying. Johns stubbornness causes the court to think he is trying to overthrow them and leads to his examination by the court. This makes it an easy decision to accuse him of witchcraft when Mary accuses him of making her write in the devil's
