John Proctor In The Crucible

John Proctor of The Crucible is a good man, but he has made some poor decisions in the past. Throughout the play, he has many moments where he becomes different. He has a change of heart in one scene. I’m talking about when he decided to confess to adultery. He thinks about it long and hard in the jail cell, and decides that, that would be the right thing to do! This was a major pivotal point for him, and The Crucible, as a whole. But, since you may not know the whole story, let’s start from the beginning! When the play begins, Reverend Parris catches some girls, one being his niece, dancing naked and doing Devilish things in the woods to get the men of their dreams to fawn over them. The niece, Abigail, has had an affair with John. She was once his servant, but John’s wife let her go because she figured everything out. She forgives him, but John is set in stone that his lips won’t budge to anyone else on the matter, ever! He is fearful of losing his good reputation in the town. Abigail, however, has her mind made up that she will have John, no matter the cost. With this mind set, and in fear of getting into trouble for dancing in the woods (a punishable sin in their culture), she starts accusing others of witchcraft. He is ashamed of his actions in the past, but keeps it covered so no one knows. However, when he confesses it, he believes that God will forgive him for it later! No longer is he worried about what others think of him, only what God thinks. Another way he changes is, he becomes compliant with himself. He hates what he’s done, as I said before, but by the pivot point, he takes pride in confessing it. He feels better when it’s finally off his shoulders. The last way he changes, is that he wants what is good and best for everyone. He puts the entire community at ease and almost peace with his confession. He takes the blame and dies so everyone can
