John was being questioned by Cheever and Danforth about his faith. Cheever tells Danforth, “” (180). Danforth believes that if one does not follow the rules they are a bad Christian and by plowing on the day of rest that therefore makes John a bad Christian. He also makes it evident that he is plowing due to the fact that everyone in town knows he is the only one plowing on Sunday. He wants people to think he does not care about how it is wrong. This makes room for everyone in the church to openly criticize him.
