John has been sentenced to hang and Reverend Hale wants him to falsely admit his guilt in order to save his life. He is conflicted with this decision, and when Elizabeth talks with him about the situation, she says, “And yet you’ve not confessed till now. That speak goodness in you”(1269 Miller). This quote shows the internal conflict that John has been struggling with; furthermore, we can get some insight into their relationship by seeing how Elizabeth can recognize and support John when dealing with this conflict. When Elizabeth says, “That speak goodness in you” we can tell that she thinks highly of her husband and his morals. In addition to John trying to keep an honorable name, he also tries to be a positive role model saying, “I have three children—how may I teach them to walk like men in the world, and I sold my friends?”(1272 Miller). This quote shows John 's integrity by letting us understand that some of his principles include not selling out his friends. When he says he has “three children” we can tell that he is trying to be strong and set an example for his kids.
