To start Mr. Proctor’s story like many other people in Salem he fights to keep his good name and protect his family. Proctor distances himself from a certain individual that can ultimately ruin his life. Abigail Williams a young beautiful women that has influenced Mr. Proctor to commit adultery and put the Proctor’s relationship at unease. One of Proctors main goals at the end of the story is to prove to the court that his wife was falsely convicted and is willing to give up his good name. In this process he is sent to jail himself and confesses to witchcraft, but his integrity overwhelms him to protecting himself leading him to the gallows. Much like Guiles Corey Mr. Proctor’s beliefs get them both killed even though neither of them were proven guilty. Over all Mr. Proctor's virtue has the final say in his actions to making himself who he is.
In today’s society the American identity varies a lot due to the individual's beliefs. Many American’s want to pursue their happiness and for most that is being well off with a stable family. As this does not apply to all many have the same actions as Mr. Putnam as he takes the sinful way of life which is through lying and cheating others. By these two different beliefs, both have something in common which is that they all stick to what they believe in. The American Identity does not have to be perfect, but at least it does not follow one set
