John Proctor and Giles Corey The play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, takes place in Massachusetts Bay during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The event made for many lives, families, and relationships to be threatened. In the play, characters John Proctor and Giles Corey were considered two men that have made many mistakes in the start, but toward the end of the play, proved that they could make a difference in the town. These two become the most brave and courageous men in the play without a doubt, these two risked their own lives to save the lives of others. John began a relation with Abigail, who was the housemaid. In doing so, he committed adultery and lechery. In an instant, people viewed the hardworking and caring man, that went to church weekly, as a sinner. After this, John began to question the girls, saying that he believed the girls were lying. He believed the girls were committing witchcraft in the woods. This demonstrated that John was brave, as the girls were believed to be“pure of blemishes”, or else no one would have said anything. After John questioned the girls, Abigail tells John that he is wrong and that no one was committing witchcraft, rather the girls were in the woods dancing and Tituba was with them. John also shows that he is brave when he shouts “ I say-I say-God is Dead! ” and that he will see all of the people burn in hell. This allowed the people to assume John worshipped the devil. John was really courageous when he rips up the warrant for the arrest of Elizabeth, showing that John was brave enough to go against the court and go against his religion, since the court was controlled by religion. During the end of the play, John signs a letter stating that he is guilty to everything he had done. But then realized that it will ruin his name. He states “why must it be written” (128), basically saying why do they have to take his name when they have already taken his soul. He tears the paper up, showing that he cared more about his belief and less about his life in that situation. John demonstrated that he could not be persuaded by Abigail and Danforth, which showed that he had he had some dignity.
