John Proctor has his trials and tribulations just like every other person. However when it comes down to it, he will always make the right decision. He is truly a tragic hero he is the person we all strive to be. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, John Proctor is a farmer in the town of Salem, Massachusetts. He had an extramarital affair with Reverend Paris's niece Abigail Williams. She is also only 16, meaning that in the case of John and her havinh intimate relations she is underaged. However, one of the biggest ones was the fact that he had a affair with Abigail Williams, this is his downfall through the writing and the key reason that the accusations started. When John tells Abigail that the accusations need to end, he states that he will do anything to prove her guilty, even admit to fornificaion! He would admit this, dishonoring himself, to show that the intentions of the accusations are not pure but driven by a jealous love. As written in the piece “You will confess to fornication? In the court? If you will have it so, so I will tell it!”(Miller 152) John is ready to tell the courts that he himself is not pure just to stop the accusations of witchcraft that are going through the town like wildfire. This shows his true character, showing that he is willing to risk his own personal namesake in the village to do the right thing and stop the innocent from being …show more content…
Stating that John Proctor is not any type of hero. That he is just a pedophile that had intercourse with a underaged girl and that he only did these thing out of regret for his actions. Also, some may think that he wa a coward for even contemplating the idea of confessing to dealing in the demonic arts and for not confronting the courts sooner. However both of these claims are flawed, A pedophie would no feel regret they enjoy their obscure and disgusting pleasures too much for regret, and he would not feel regret for the deaths of the others in the others in the town, only for himself as pedophiles are usually in the history of the persona selfish and only do what benefits them in some sort of way. On the note of being a coward, John proctor was far from being a cowardly man. Everyone has some cowardice act in them however, most can not say that they would risk their own namesake to stop accusations of the townspeople, or to save ones lover. Most people worship social standing too much for this to even be a idea, let alone a option of action. Therefore in the essence of it all, John Proctor truly is a tragic hero. He has his trials and tribulations, however those are diminished by his all around character, courage, and selflessness. He might not be as pure as the driven snow. However, he truly is the man you want by your side,
