John Procter was a farmer/outcast of Salem who has a wife (Elizabeth), 2 kids, and usually never attended the church. John is a good honest man who is able to see all perspectives of a situation and always sought for a solution that would benefit the people most, he was really looked up to by the people of the village. John has played an important role in the development of the story.
John Procter was a victim of the witchcraft accusations just as his wife was after trying to save the wrongly accused. His whole motivation of saving everyone was after he discovered the accusations were lies for people’s own benefit such as Abigail’s accusation of Goody Proctor. The whole situation arose from the love triangle involving John, Elizabeth, and Abigail. I choose courage for this story and John in general because it took a lot of courage from people to keep their dignity and tell the truth that they are not witches even though they knew it would mean certain death. This was a division between the strong and feeble minded characters who died with pride through thick and thin. John had it the hardest though, he stuck up with Reverend Hale to defend the wrongly accused and call out the accuser’s lies even knowing the possibilities of the tables turning on them. Arguably another good theme for “The Crucible” is Deception. Because of the endless lies and deception from the girls in Salem, many innocent people died just because the girls wanted to save their own skins. The whole situation could have been easily prevented if no one would have lied and justice would have been served
