To be a leader you must first learn how to follow. This can be from learning from leaders from the past to leaders in the present. John Paul Jones is a leader that exemplifies what it means to be a leader. From when he is in a situation to when he is among his subordinates. But to understand how to become a leader much like John Paul Jones you must first look at what he did to become a leader himself. John Paul Jones was from a small village called Solway Firth, Scotland. He began his naval career at the age of thirteen while working as an apprentice mariner. He took up this trade and learned it quite well. By the age of twenty-on John Paul Jones was seen as being a master of a ship. When the war against England began in 1775 John Paul Jones went to Philadelphia to offer his service in the Continental Navy. That December of 1775 he because a newly senior lieutenant within the Continental Navy. Even though he had the choice to have his own command he decided to turn that offer down. He had chosen instead to serve as an officer in the Esek Hopkin’s squadron aboard the Alfred. This allowed him to learn war tactics and maneuvers. John Paul Jones had a strong desire to pursue knowledge. From his new found knowledge he was selected to be in command for the first time. While in command he was very successful in commerce raiding. In 1777, John Paul Jones had come up with a new strategy for the Continental Navy to follow. He had realized that the Navy protecting the coast of America were unsuccessful. He decided that instead of sitting and waiting that the Continental Navy should take the war to England. This would then cause the British to have to think of another way to get resources to America.
