He had to experience the death of his family at a very young age. Saint John Paul the Great had a mother, father, sister, and a brother. His family was known as the only people who did not show racism towards the Jews. It all started when his mother, Emilia, became extremely ill. She had been sick for years, but it got to the point where it was unbearable. Therefore, Karol Sr., her husband, asked for an early retirement from the military so he could take care of his wife. One day when Saint John Paul, whose name was Karol Wojtyła or Lolek back then, came home from school and found out that his mother has passed away due to kidney failure and heart disease in the year if 1929. Karol was only 8 years old at the time, so imagine how heartbroken the poor boy felt. A couple years later, his brother, Edmund, died of scarlet fever. The cause of his illness was because he was a doctor, and a young patient under his care got Edmund sick. By the year of 1932, Lolek had lost his elder brother and his mother. To make matters worse the young child also lost his father 9 years later as a result of a heart attack. Karol also had a sister, however she died when she was a newborn. So therefore, Karol never got to meet her. At the age of twenty, he lost his entire family and everyone he has ever loved. His five loves were young people, human love, the blessed sacrament, the Virgin Mary, and the cross. His first love was young people. The Pope loved to talk to and inspire children and teenagers. They often called him the Holy Father. A significant amount of messages that the Pope proclaimed mostly had to do with the fact that God loves them and will never give them more than they can handle. He always had a connection with young people and could be considered a child at heart. The Pope loved to ski and do fun things with the children. Because of this great enjoyment, Pope John Paul II organized World Youth Days. World Youth Days where, when thousands of young people showed up at a specific location just to listen to the Pope give speeches and affect others in a beautiful way. He flew all around the world just to talk to the youth because he felt that they were helping him just as much as he was helping them. The next love was human love. The Pope believed that human love had to deal with chastity, contraception, modesty, lust, and much more. He drilled that sexual drive is a gift from God and that you must love someone in order to have sexual urge. If there is no love within sexual interaction then one is being seen as an object rather than a person.
