John Parker woke up from his cell early. “I guess we’re still at sea” he mumbled, getting up from the floor. Ever since he had smuggled some goods from the Valencian Armada, he had paid the price, spending weeks in prison. But today, something felt different. “Ahoy there,” said a voice behind John’s cell. He turned around, and there were two men standing right near his cell door. There was a monkey who liked like he was in the navy, and a big old man with an eyepatch. “What’s your name, pirate?” the man said. “Uh.. Noble John Parker, sir.” John replied, glancing around the cell. “I told you, he is the one!” the monkey said, “Now let’s get him ou-” “Not so fast,” said the man, “If you are who you say you are, prove it.” “Now, where did you

In the Contending Voices section The Price of Patriotism: Jonathan Sewall and John Adams the main issue is the divide between the patriots and the loyalists, and how they viewed and experienced the American Revolution. This issue is described from the viewpoints of close friends, Jonathan Sewall, a loyalist, and John Adams a patriot. Adams and Sewall came from similar backgrounds with both of them attending Harvard, “and pursued legal careers after unhappy stints as school teachers” (54). Sewall was able to easily rise into a career in law while his friends John Adams lacked family connections so he had to work his way up from the bottom (54). In my opinion john proctor is not a tragic hero. Simply because how is he a hero when he did not really save anyone. All he did was turn himself in and throw himself under the bus right along with everyone else. I think he is a good guy but the decision he made was not the right one. When he had a chance to take his wife and get her pregnant…

Religious rigidity is not something that is widely accepted in society. People have become too fearful of someone knocking on their door and pushing religion on them. Likewise, people see religion as too organized and archaic, questioning why they have to believe in an invisible presence that is looking out for them or abide by the rules and commandments to be accepted into an invisible eternity. In Flannery O’Connor’s “Parker’s Back” and Eileen Pollack’s…

Distortion is arguably the most persuasive technique an author can utilize, because, once the truth is revealed, a text and its themes are much more resonant and influential. When faced with distortion, a reader is forced to examine their beliefs and actions in comparison to the author’s underlying statements about people and society as a whole. Herman Melville’s Benito Cereno, one of the greatest works of distortion of all time, recounts the story of a slave ship called the San Dominick. Captain Delano, the commander of the Bachelor’s Delight, boards the San Dominick, which appears to be in distress. Despite having numerous suspicions about the slave’s role on the ship, Delano does not realize the truth until the conclusion of the story: the…

As darkness and deceit looms over an enclosed exhibit, sacrifice causes the veiled eyes of humans to be freed from a glazed state and becomes the impetus for the diffusion of this new sight throughout a community. In Arthur Miller’s drama The Crucible, sacrifices to restore equilibrium within oneself are crucial, for the birth of a sacrifice from one person inspires the spread of healing into a community and stops the copious flow of evil from one liar. With trembling hands full of the blood he tried to heal Salem with, Giles Corey sacrifices his mortality to save another man from the veneer of myth cloaking over the court as well as expose the deceit of the noxious court. Yet as Giles’ transience symbolizes ultimate sacrifice, John Proctor,…

Born October 16, 1644, William Penn would be one of the first heroes of American Liberty, having found Pennsylvania where those who resided were allowed to have freedom of conscience and could practice whichever religion they desired. As opposed to other colonies where English newcomers were to follow The Church of England, Penn would stand up against both the New World and the Old World. Quaker.org and the book titled Freedom Seeker: A story about William Penn, demonstrate and elaborate more on how these activists contributed to U.S. history by becoming the most liberal…

An individual’s interaction with others and the world around can influence, alter, one’s behaviour, actions and beliefs. However, various external factors influence an individual such as, positive and accepting environments an individual’s sense of belonging can enrich and expand, while negative behaviours such as exclusion and rejection might limit and restrict it; this in turn moulds one’s sense of acceptance and value of being. This idea is explored in the picture book, The Island by Armin Greder which analyses segregation and discrimination, and further alludes to the strong xenophobic culture and how such ideals can influence the experience of belonging.…

The Crucible “The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and ability to affect those around him positively”(Bob Marley). John proctor was not a wealthy man, nor was he perfect, but he fought against the corruption within the court system. Proctor achieved moral integrity by admitting to his mistakes, and his refusal to confessing a crime he did not commit, he found self-respect when he did that, he would of rather died than be tortured his whole life based on a lie. Arthur Miller shows us that any man, good or bad can do something good and selfless. John Proctor was a well respected farmer in salem.…
