Eulogy Of John Papa John

Introduction:
John Papa John started off his lecture by giving us a little bit about his background. He is originally from Greece; he is an immigrant and takes pride in it. Him and his mother came to America on a boat with his mother speaking no English. He grew up in Mason City, Iowa where he started kindergarten. He said he failed kindergarten twice, mainly because he didn’t know much English.

Childhood:
In Mason City he lived with a diverse group of people. His dad owned a grocery store here during the depression and people would steal and learn to survive. He dad was kind enough to give charity to these people who couldn’t provide for themselves. This is one of the main reasons he is so passionate about philanthropy. John called himself

So he gave everyone ten dollars to donate to where ever they wanted to. This was so amazing. He said he had enough for everyone in the audience plus more. I was sure to donate my ten dollars to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

What I Have Learned
I took many things away from this lecture. He talked about how he managed, saved, and give money. He expressed that all three of theses areas are possible even when you don’t have that much money. He has been able to continuously give back the University of Iowa. His first donation was five dollars. Every little bit counts.

Manage Money
He talked about how it was important to learn to manage and to budget. He stressed not to take out any more loans then what you need. He talked about how he worked a lot in college but then he graduated with $2,000 in his account still. College is expensive but if I work on top of going to school I could save myself some debt.

Save Money
Saving is another component he mentioned. Don’t spend your money on things you don’t need. Only buy what is needed. He talked about how his friends had a nice car and he didn’t even have a car to drive.

It appeared as though he was trying to inflict fear into his audience. He was trying to warn them that the people they devoted all of their time and effort into educating may not even be hired, because they focused all on their business education and not on any liberal arts. That’s a pretty good way to persuade people. That’s how these people make their living and they don’t want to waste it, nor do they want their school to end up with a bad reputation because their alumni never get…

Philanthropic actions are often too focused on serving the philanthropist, rather than those philanthropized. Mr. Norton is one of the school's original founders, and describes the school as his "work" and his "destiny." Though Mr. Norton may appear to be benevolent, his motives are less pure than they seem. Norton’s case is similar to the white man’s burden in that he feels vastly superior to black men, and donates to feel important. He explains his motives for helping the school in that “[The Founder] had tens of thousands of lives dependent upon his ideas and upon his action.…
