He was raised in a Christian household but in the event of his mother’s death he fell into unsavory company. He faced many hardships throughout his life which caused him to fluctuate in his devotedness. The first turning point that inspired his love of God was a dream he had during his voyage to Venice. Three men visited him in this vision. The first gentleman gave him a ring that was said to promise all happiness. He threw the ring away when a second man mocked his gullibility. The man immediately informed him that he had cast away God’s mercy and would perish in Hell. A third man appeared and told him that the ring was actually safe but Newton was too foolish to have it. He even served on Sierra Leone at a slave factory. It was here that he is poorly treated by his Master’s black mistress. It was throughout these two years of misery that many slaves befriended him and aided him through this dark gestation. Despite his own horrid experience he still considered the slave trade to be an honorable profession for a gentleman to engage in. In the future he started to captain slave vessels himself. It was during this career that he began to pray for his “cargo”. This was the beginning of his change in opinion against the slaves. John Newton even came to help investigate the slavery
