John Milton’s Characterization of God as ‘King’ In the poem When I consider how my light is spent by John Milton, the speaker characterizes God as ‘king’ as a measure of demonstrating his strengthening faith in God. Via the structure of the poem, choice of words and Language, rhyme scheme and sound, tone, we readers are able to obtain what the main focus and theme of what the poem emphasizes on; Dreams, hope and religious beliefs. Religious beliefs plays a major role in the poem; with his religious beliefs brings about dreams and hope for the future, which is him being able to accomplish more now than before he became hindered. We readers are able to relate to the discomfort and hurt John Milton may be going through due to his choice of figurative language. The poem begins with “When I consider how my light is spent” (1). John Milton chooses to begin the poem like that and chooses those exact words for a purpose. He is a challenging writer therefore making it problematic task understanding what he means precisely. From the way the poem began, at first I found it difficult comprehending the main idea because of the adjectival diction used. The diction makes it tougher to understand, but through he choice of words I have been able to visualize. It is evident that Milton respects God and his wishes; commencing from lines eight till fourteen, Milton’s characterization of God as King “His state/is kingly” (11/12) signifies his strengthening faith in God because progressively, he realizes that even without his eyesight, he is still able to achieve and accomplish Gods wishes by praising him regardless “God doth not need/Either man’s work or his own gifts; who best/bear his mild yoke, they serve him best” (9,10,11). This quote is God’s response to John Milton after endless interrogations. God does not require any mans labour or talents. His best servants are the ones who adore and worship him irrespective of their life burden or problems being able to praise him through everything.
