John Merrick's Behavior

John merrick was born on August 5, 1862, in Leicester, England. From a young age he was cursed with the hideous disfigurement of his body. So extreme that he was forced to enter the freak show to be exhibited as an animal, hence the name ¨Elephant Man¨. Because of his disfigurement he was rejected by society and was treated like a monster, being isolated in cages and living in inhumane condition until he found refuge in a London hospital.
After taking shelter at the hospital, John Merrick began to build a model of St. Philips, a cathedral that he could see from his window. The model was made mainly through his imagination due to the fact that he was only able to see the tip of the church from the view in his room.
The church is an important figure to Merrick. It is a symbol to his life at the hospital. The church becomes nearer to completion as Merrick’s life becomes better. Upon finishing it, Merrick signs his …show more content…
As merrick explained, Romeo did not actually love Juliet, it was all just an illusion. Romeo just loved the idea of loving Juliet, and when that illusion ended he had to kill himself. Same thing goes for the cathedral. Merrick could have possibly thought that his life in the hospital was just an illusion. That Treves and the other did not actually care about Merrick as they claim they did. Merrick just loved the idea of being loved back by others but he knew those feeling weren't true. They were using him to gain media attention and make a better name for themselves. For example Treves just used Merrick to gain more respect in the medical field, and Ms.Kendal could have been using Merrick to spread her name in the acting world so more people would come to see her plays. Imagine if Treves was not a doctor and Ms.Kendall was not an actress, do you think they would´ve have treated Merrick the same way they had?. When Merrick made sense of that, the illusion ended and he had to kill
