Precautionary Acts
There are many cases where offenders have taken precautionary acts before, during and after committing a crime. A good example in this case would be the ones discovered in the infamous Wisconsin v. John Maloney case of 1998. John Maloney became a suspect in the murder case of his wife Sandra Jean Maloney after she was found dead in her house, which seemed it have been consumed by fire (Baeza et al, 2000). Sandra was found dead by her mother on 11th February, 1998 by her mother. Initial reports indicated that Sandra was a victim of accidental fire. The victim was found lying face down on her couch, her windows were all locked apart from one which was a few inches open, her phone had been disconnected and her door had been latched

This was because Sandra was suffering from depression and other emotional disorders, which made her a heavy drinker and smoker (Reid & Buckley, 2011). However, when investigations were carried out, doctors said that there were several things from the scene of the crime as well as the autopsy report that proved that Sandra’s death was a staged homicide. They said that there were injuries on her back which proved that she must have been forced to face downwards maybe from the attacker’s knee (Chisum & Turvey, 2000).
Additionally, reports from Green Bay fire department said that there were matches under, and on the side of the couch where the victim was found, which had accelerated the fire. There was also an opened book on the side of the couch which they also said must have accelerated the fire whose origin proved to be around the victim’s lap and the couch itself (Baeza et al, 2000). There were also other irregularities at the crime scene as well as in the autopsy report, which made investigators conclude that Sandra’s death was a staged homicide and not an accidental

When it comes to the definition of Situational Crime prevention, Martha J. Smith, referenced in the Oxford Bibliographies, presents us with a broad definition. She states that Situational Crime prevention “seeks to reduce the number of crime events by focusing on limiting the opportunities for crime to occur” (Smith, 2011). The Oxford Bibliographies also states that Situational Crime Prevention researchers assume offenders are rational when coming up with methods to stop crime (2011). For a more narrow definition, we turn to the textbook. In our textbook, it is stated that “situational crime prevention can be characterized as comprising measures (1) directed at highly specific forms of crime (2) that involve the management, design, or manipulation…

The research of the Chicago School Theory can be linked to a model taken from ecology (Bohm and Vogel, 2011). In order for one to understand the Chicago School Theory, one must first define ecology. Ecology can be defined as the branch of biology that studies the interrelationship of plants and animals in their natural environment (Bohm and Vogel, 2011). This comparison of crime to ecology was first examined by Robert Park and his colleague, Ernest Burgess (Bohm and Vogel, 2011). Park acknowledged that human ecology takes place through the process of invasion, dominance, and succession.…
